In  Vedic Religion or what is termed as Hinduism we have a pantheon of gods or so it seems but the fact of the matter is that as in all the other standard religions there is in truth only one God who is the creator ,maintainer  and destroyer of the manifold variety of creation. This has been misconstrued by some due to the affinity of a votary to worship  a particular divine being or demigod who have been simply  placed by the Supreme Creator in different roles of governance for the maintenance of the different aspects of the creation .In truth ,all  living beings have to die irrespective ,still ,divine beings have a very long life span according to their position and responsibility in this universe. Only the one Supreme God remains immortal as the Original Person. Sometimes the question is raised why did He bring about the creation and with it so much suffering .In fact the answer by some sages is that all we perceive is the sport of the Lord .In fact , being eternal transcendental sparks of the Supreme Lord are by intrinsic nature very blissful but by disobedience to the Supreme Creator have become embodied to suffer the pangs of material life .The holy scriptures are there to lead the conditioned soul back to the stage of freedom from the thralls of embodied existence. Just as the Christian scriptures firstly commands one to love God , the Vedic scriptures too teaches us the essence of spiritual life is to love the Supreme Person alone and the process or method of communicating with the Supreme Deity in a loving mood. Many people go to the temple and pray mainly for their health ,wealth and happiness in life but these things can be given by minor divinities or demigods and that cannot be called love in any way but simply some form of exchange between the votary and the divine being. So it is important for the seeker to approach the one true immortal Supreme Being in order to arrive at the Highest destination. As the scriptures states we are revolving in countless bodies from trees ,insects ,birds ,fishes, beasts being able finally  to receive  after many lifetimes ,this valuable human body .Valuable in the sense that unlike animals we have now  the power of discrimination to advance in spiritual realization  and experience real joy which is by right our constitutional position. So we are in this ocean  of material transmigration and the first step after receiving this rare human body is to approach an established spiritual master and take complete shelter of his divine instructions .

Sometimes the question arises that  when we visit the temple of a secondary divinity   or demigod in which way is it different. Actually to worship some other God separately as the Supreme Deity is just being misguided. in our spiritual search. As Lord Krishna says in Geeta that He is the only enjoyer of all sacrifices and offerings  .   One of the most ancient temples in India existing for some thousands of years as the Jagannath temple in Puri, Orissa  has a rigid code of rules in their temple worship of Lord Vishnu since immemorial time.. Even now the food offerings after being offered to the main deities are then offered to the Goddess Vimala or Durga  and then the remnants of this are then distributed to the common people in the form of sanctified food. The most holy temple of Siva in Bhuveneswar, Orissa  has a similar custom .All the offerings of the most ancient Visnu temple or Ananta Vasudeva are then offered to Lord Siva and then only distributed .There is no direct offering To Lord Siva in that temple all offerings are what has been offered to the Nearby Vishnu temple of Ananta  Vasudeva. This is in accordance with the Holy texts as the  verdict of the Bhagavat Geeta or instructions of Lord Krishna to Arjuna .So the summum bonnum of the scriptures is how we can attain Love of the Supreme Deity which will then ensure our everlasting joy and happiness to be freed completely from the trammels of this painful material existence. Although in different religions He has been denoted by different names  ,The Supreme Lord in omnipotent and it is foolish to limit him to one name for that will only decry his omnipotence. His primary names   have been elucidated in the scriptures .In this age of Kali he has enforced all his energies in His holy Names and simply by chanting and remembering his Holy names one can eventually attain to that aspired state of communion with the Supreme Lord.
