ADVERSE DEVOTION
For the devotee who worships The Supreme Lord in order to enjoy his turbulent senses ,SriKrishna mercifully makes the ignorant devotee forget that enjoying mood by recharging him with the absolute bliss of his devotional service. Srila Krishna Das Kaviraja in the Chaitanya Charitamrta explains the pastime of of    Dhruva Maharaja where at the onset   he desired for the highest regal opulence but by the worship of the Supreme Lord  gradually  that desire waned away. In the scriptures ,devotion to the Lord is mentioned as very difficult to achieve. From time immemorial ,this quest have not proved fruitful for those under the bondage of work and for the  aspirants of liberation. In Geeta ,the Lord specifically declares that according to the way a votary worships him in that way ,he is rewarded. Hence those who worship desiring their fruits will only be able to obtain such fruits and not devotion in any way. Only the devotee who renounces all such desires up to liberation by surrender to the Lord is able to attain devotion. King Kulesekhara prays to the Lord. O Lord !I am not interested in the happiness of the heavenly planets nor am I interested in the lowly material enjoyment which is like straw .I am ready to suffer the consequences of all my misdeeds with a clam frame of mind without any respite as by the stringent laws enacted by You. I am not troubled by repeated births but my plea to you is that birth after birth that I may have devotion to your Lotus feet. A sincere devotee therefore prays in this mood. Mahapraphu has also taught us a similar verse in his teachings as na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagad Isa kamaye to demonstrate that the devotee is ready to renounce wealth ,followers ,beautiful women or scholarship for the sake of causeless devotion to the Lotus Feet of the Lord. This is the qualification to attain devotion. As the verse Krsna bhakata niskama ateva santa meaning the devotee of Krishna is peaceful by being freed from material enjoyment. There are some who do not believe  this verdict .They argue just as one who desires happiness and wealth from the Lord the devotee also seeks to attain devotion so how can he be considered desireless? The difference is explained by Srila Krishna Das Kaviraja as atmapritivancha and krsna pritivanacha or the desires to please one's body and mind and self and the other the desire to please the senses of SriKrishna. The latter is not under the label of kama or desire ,In fact all desires for enjoyment with the use of the working and knowledge gathering senses ,to attain all mystic perfections and up to the point of merging with Brahman all all under the efforts in pleasing oneself atmapritivancha. Bhajan involves the aJ dhatu which means to serve .The sincere devotee aspires for the qualification to serve Krishna -krsna pritivancha. Although the function of the senses is to serve the mind is constantly is  demanding the fruits of any endeavor, the devotee of Krishna is established in his service to the Lord. The fruitive workers and seekers of knowledge though engaged are far from devotion. Many of them worship the demigods and in that respect their worship of the Supreme Lord becomes secondary so how will hey attain devotion? The basic ingredient is surrender and even though the aspirant may have all other good qualities but without surrender there is no way of attaining devotion to the Lord in spite of his striving. Another statement which needs to be discussed although it seems contradictory,
kama lage krsna -bhaje paya krsna rase
As one may be full of desires but by unalloyed service to Krsna he is able to attain devotion
There are many individuals who perform all the tenets of the scriptures strictly in their worship of the Lord but there is no unalloyed desire for service. But Dhruva Maharaj though initially being tainted by desire but by his unflinching faith and surrender with following the instructions of the pure devotees all his contamination dwindled away. Hence though  the devotee initially may be with adverse desires but by surrender his striving takes the form of mixed devotion and gradually performing devotional service in the association of devotees it  transforms in to pure devotion just as in the example of Dhruva Maharaja mentioned above.
